Streams of the visa
Business Innovation stream
For:
- People who have had a successful business for at least 2 years immediately before the visa application and want to establish, develop and manage a new or existing business in Australia
Conditions:
- Nomination by a state or territory government
Investor Stream
For:
- People who want to make a designated investment ($1.5 million or above) in an Australian state or territory and maintain business and investment activity in Australia
Conditions:
- Nomination by a state or territory government
Significant Investor Stream
For:
- People who want to make a designated investment ($5 million or above) into complying premium investments in Australia and maintain business and investment activity in Australia
Conditions:
- Nomination by a state or territory government or Austrade on behalf of the Australian government
Premium Investor Stream
For:
- People who want to make a designated investment ($15 million or above) into complying premium investments in Australia and maintain business and investment activity in Australia
Conditions:
- Nomination by Austrade on behalf of the Australian government
Before the application
The applicant needs to:
- Submit and Expression of Interest (EOI)
Specify- Which stream you intend to apply under
- Which state or territory you wish to seek nomination from or if you are seeking nomination from the Australian government (where possible)
- Be nominated by a state or territory government or Austrade on behalf of the Australian government
- Be invited through SkillSelect
- Apply online for the visa within 60 days after receiving the invitation
- Provide supporting documents and meet additional requirements for the stream in which you apply
- Speak vocational English proved by a language
- Undertake a health examination (health requirements)
- Provide a police certificate (character requirements)
- Have a valid passport or other travel document
- Sign the Australian values statement

Business Innovation and Investment (Permanent) Visa (subclass 888)
- Manage your business and investments in Australia
- Stay in Australia indefinitely
- Work and study in Australia
- Enrol in Medicare
- Apply for Australian citizenship (if eligible)
- Sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residence
- Travel to and from Australia for five years from the date the visa is granted
(after that you need a resident return visa or another visa to return to Australia)
Before the application
The applicant needs to:
- Hold a provisional Business Innovation and Investment visa (subclass 188)
or hold a Special Category visa (Subclass 444) or a Business (Long stay) visa (subclass 457IE) (primary or secondary visa holder) - Have met the requirements for the previous visa (188, 444, 457IE)
- Have a satisfactory record of complying with Commonwealth laws, and of the State / Territory the business is located
- Be nominated by an Australian state or territory or by Austrade on behalf of the Australian government
- Satisfy the health requirement
- Provide AFP and national police clearance from any country where the applicant has lived for over 12 months since he or she turned 16
- Have a valid passport or other travel document
- Have a realistic commitment to maintain business or investment activities in Australia
- Meet the additional requirements for the stream in which the SC 188 was held
The applicant (and partner) must NOT be:
- Involved in any unacceptable business or investment activities in Australia
