Australia’s points-based immigration system is designed to meet Australia’s economic and social needs. The number of places is set annually following community consultation and economic modelling.
In the financial year 2015 / 2016 were 190,000 permanent migration places available with 128,500 places allocated to skilled workers and 57,400 for family reunion. There were also a small number of special eligibility places.

How to apply for a skilled working visa
There are two main routes leading to a temporary work or permanent residency visa. A skilled worker can get a visa either through a skills point test or a nomination by the employer.
Points are awarded under the skills test for a variety of factors such as level of education, employment experience, English language ability and age.
Is the worker nominated for a position to work in Australia, he or she must have the necessary skills and meet various requirements in terms of character, health and English language.
